radiator painting

I bought some water based radiator paint and have given the radiator a first coat this morning.
Just before leaving for work I took a look at it and there were a few spots where I had sanded back to bare metal.
These areas are know drying with rust spots on them.
I know I should have primed them but in money saving style thought I would miss that out has it would mean another tin of paint for one small rad.
Anyway I have some leyland oil based undercoat for wood and metal does anyone know if I could spot prime these areas with this?
I also have leyland satinwood for wood and metal (oil based) would this have been ok for the radiator?

I have used Hammerite Radiator paint, it seems to resist yellowing better than others.

If you buy a can of primer paint, try and get a white primer, or at least grey. It should be far less coats to cover than the Red oxide.0

Have a few rads to do myself this month. I have used gloss in the past, but it looks like a diy job when it's finished.
What about spray paint. Is that as good? Can I buy a primer in a spray can?:jI gave up jogging for health reasons; my thighs rubbed together and my knickers caught fire!0 -
I have used water based paint on rads for the past 25 years WITHOUT any problem. Wash well with "liquid sand" and rinse well with clear water. Once dry coat with your colour choice of emulsion. Two coats might be necessary (sometime 3). I hate gloss as it makes the rads look "council house" sorry for those of you living in one. Special rad paint is expensive, emulsion paint if done poperly will work wonders.0

IMHO the only way if you want a good LASTING finish.
1 Treat rust spots
2 Spray primer
3 Spray gloss
build up with thin coats, toxic, ventilate area, mask req;0 -
does anyone know if you can get a water based primer for bare metal on radiators/pipes? i have the same problem in that i sanded back to metal in a couple of places and painted straight on, the rust spots are showing through and i'm guessing will get worse if i leave it. i'd just rather stick with water based if possible as i like the ease of cleaning brushes.0
