35% gain from an etf in a month

I am invested in INRG - ishares global clean energy and it has gained over 35% in a month which is very unusual for an etf. Anyone know what the reason for this may be and whether it is likely to continue gaining at this pace.

  • Well it holds Plug Power (PLUG) for one, backed by Jeff Bezos.
I think Nikola (NKLA) has done a lot of good for alternative energy with all the fake claims Trevor has made these past couple of months!!!
He's certainly made people aware of the sector.

It's not unusual for funds that are highly volatile and invest in niche areas.

Anything that goes up by that amount in a month can go down by that amount in a month.   As the future it unknown, it is impossible to predict.     It is certainly a growth area but it is one that is likely to be very volatile in its long term growth.

I bought a chunk in this one in mid march for around 550 and I had a smaller amount already from a year before. Prior to covid it was beginning to ramp up, got up to 650 or so before dropping as per everything. But since the general recovery it has grown hugely, now at approx 930.  There are a number of solar power type companies in it and these have taken off since June, they are all the rage. I took a little profit 3 weeks ago.  Tbh all I thought in March was that it's seems like an ethical place to invest, and so far so lucky.

Do you read the published monthly factsheets?

Trust you had a sizable sum invested. :)

How dare you.  Everyone knows trucks consume far less electricity and are thus more environmentally friendly when they're rolling down a hill.  If only you shared his vision, you'd know that too.

I don’t read the monthly factsheets.
I invested £10k in May when the share price was 490 so I have almost doubled my investment.
I was thinking of too slicing it last week but decided to let it ride whilst it is still performing like this. If it starts dropping then I will top slice it.

Personally I'm a fan of top slicing after a sizable gain over a short period of time. Though understanding why the revaluation is key.

Ditto.  I didnt know it had gone up so much i dont really watch it much, its for the next 20 years. But good for my grandkids, i put them in that as well.
Stick with it. As the oil majors become minors, the only way for "alternative*" energy is up. I
I dont believe in "top slicing". Maybe that works with equities vs bonds, with shares to me that's saying "i've got a really good performing investment i'm going to swap it for a worse one".  (of course if you've got a better candidate by all means, but dont sell it just because its gone up . Thats why you bought it, right?
FWIW I dont know they had a monthly fact sheet. I might read one !

    * soon to become mainstream.

I guess the problem with top slicing, is either that you monitor your investments on a short term, and attempt to read the market, taking out gains when they could go a lot higher(or equally not), or to the opposite, reduce your positions in stocks that are under performing in your portfolio, before giving them a chance to recover.

I have top sliced in the past just to rebalance my portfolio when I thought that a certain fund was getting too big.
The only time I tried to time the market was when I and others on this forum thought that there was going to be a big drop due to COVID and I sold all my equities towards the end of Feb. I didn’t sell at the top and I didn’t reinvest at the bottom as I didn’t start reinvesting until April but considering most equities dropped between 25-35% it was still well worth my while.
