Default Notice BT - Help needed!

Options
Hi, I have just discovered that I have a default notice on my credit report for an account that I closed in 2015.  At the time I was moving to France and had to pay in the region of £250 to BT as I still had a number of months on my contract.  I remember at the time specifically requesting a final figure and didn't think anymore of it.  I am in the process of applying for a mortgage which has been turned down because of this default notice.  I wasn't aware that I had a debt.  I have called BT and offered to pay the sum of £40 which was outstanding but have learned that the debt has been written off by a debt collection agency and they are not able to provide me with details of this agency as account is so old.  I am left having to deal with this via Equifax but am now in serious danger of losing my new home as it could take up to 21 days to resolve, my mortgage application will take a further 40 days to complete, to say I am miffed is an understatement!

If anyone has some advice on how I can speed things up or details of debt collection agency that BT uses, it would be much appreciated, thanks in advance!

Nothing you can do but wait. What date is the default?
  • A default is correct if you didn't pay what you owe, Equifax will not remove it, nor will the lender, it is an accurate reflection of the situation which is what they are required to provide to lenders, else everyone would try and hide their past if it was less than rosy. Find a broker who deals with bad credit history or wait until 6 years after the default date when it will clear
  • Why not rent until the CCJ is gone from your report.

Another case where the poster has been poor admin.
  • Oops !
    Good luck getting it sorted.

I had a similar issue with BT about 5 years ago. I emailed the CEO and it was passed to there executive complaints team and they arranged for the default to be removed.

Under what legitimate grounds for removal?

I asked for the final bill amount paid it, however it wasn’t the final bill amount I then moved 2 years later ended up with a default for about £40 odd quid.

  • Thanks for all of your comments, mostly appreciated!

I contacted the Chairman of BT and explained my predicament who very kindly arranged for the senior investigation team to look into this for me.  Within a couple of days, investigation team contacted Equifax and had my credit report cleared of this default which was incorrect and I shall be forever grateful as I have now been able to successfully proceed with my mortgage.

With respect 'Farfetch" it isn't true to say Equifax or Lender will not remove default as they clearly did in my situation for a debt I knew nothing about and was not an accurate reflection of my account, I certainly didn't and don't have any credit history to hide!

With respect to 'thenonameleague' it wasn't poor admin on my part ....
