Solar thermal is a waste of money, you'll spend more the money saved maintaining the system. I've had to get involved in so many court cases on solar thermal systems where the potential savings have been significantly overestimated - it reality it's about £50-£60 per year, with no payback possible.

If you've got an efficient gas boiler then this will be cheaper to run than a heat pump anyway. Only really worth considering a heat pump if you're replacing an oil boiler or direct electric heating.

So you would say it's not worth it even if it's free?

The problem is you have to have one "primary" upgrade done which can be:

    Solid wall
    Cavity wall
Under-floor insulation (solid floor; suspended floor)
    Loft
    Flat roof
    Room in roof
    Park home insulation
    Low carbon heat:
    Air source heat pump
    Ground source heat pump
    Solar thermal
    Biomass boilers

Then you can spend an equal amount on secondary measures like upgrading windows and doors. So we need to spend a decent amount on the primary thing and the only other one we could have is cavity wall insulation which would probably only be £1000.

No, solar thermal isn't worth it even if it is free IMO - but if you need to tick the box to trigger the secondary payment, then you could always just isolate it when it breaks in the future.

The wording on the website states that 'the voucher must be used to install at least 1 primary measure', which suggests that you could pick a few of the primary measures. You also missed hybrid heat pump off your list, which might be appropriate than the others in your case.
  • Thanks. I copied the list off their website: https://www.simpleenergyadvice.org.uk/pages/green-homes-grant

Anyway you could be right, maybe we can get enough insulation installed or maybe we can find some other way to build it up. Daft but that's how they have decided it must work.
  • I always believed you should insulate the crap out of your house firstly before anything else , if you wrap a thick blanket around your house you wont need to use as much gas/electric to heat your house in the first place , if at all

Your home will need to be insulated well anyway before being allowed other primary measures so you’ll have to get the cavity wall (and loft insulation if it’s not already adequate) if you want any of the energy efficient heating. If you’re not eligible for the full £10,000 then any primary measures (other than the insulation) will wipe out the whole £5000 grant anyway and there’ll be nothing left for secondary measures.
