Home Insurance with Mine Shafts Near

Hi all,

Trying to sort home insurance on our house.

The property was built on former mining fields and there's a filled in mine shaft within the neighbouring property, Do I need to tell the insurance companies about this as it's not covered on their list of questions (apart from subsidence)? The area is covered by indemnity cover courtesy of the coal mining board so any related issues would be covered by them.

TIA

Matt

No need to disclose if they don't ask (and I've never encountered them asking). They'll know from postcodes where is more likely to be affected by mining anyway.

Indeed, if the insurer wants to know about something, the onus is on them to ask. As a consumer you are not expected to second-guess what your insurer might or might not think is relevant to your policy, so you have no obligation to volunteer information that they don't ask about. This principle was incorporated into the law in 2013, but it has been industry codes of practice for much longer.
