The inconvenience of Nationwide mobile banking

Does anyone know a bank whose mobile banking does not require the use of a second security device?
I am with Nationwide and they are now asking for authentication using their card reader and debit card to make a payment to someone I have paid before. I'm sure this extra layer of security will be sold as being in our interest, but it verges on paranoia - I've already used my thumbprint to get into my phone, then again to access my account on the app. How much more secure can it get?
What's more, it won't let me change the payment reference for someone I have paid before. For this, I have to login online and go through the same card reader procedures. Just to change a reference!!!!!!!!!!!!
I thought the idea of mobile banking was convenience and control. These new measures remove these benefits.

Barclays mobile app lets you pay previously set up payees without a secondary device and you can change the payment reference each time.

While Barclays has its ups and downs like all banks do (and I’ve had my fair share of issues caused by them!), I actually think they have the best online banking and mobile app out of the many I have used.
  • First Direct - you use fingerprint to authenticate new payee

I don't recall ever having to use the card reader to complete a payment to someone I have paid previously.  This includes this morning from their App.

  • Nationwide has always let me pay existing payees without further card reader security.
They used to let you update the reference field too but now requires card reader authentication - not ideal but can live with it.
  • Yes I've paid people without any extra confirmation as long as they were previous payees.

NatWest and Virgin are fine, once the payee is set up.

With NatWest changing the reference restricts the allowable sending limit, but there's no need for the card reader (CR). I've even set new payees up, it just means again there's a limit to how much can be sent a day.

They have been asking me to confirm a payment to an existing payee with a card reader only last week. It's a silly an superfluous 'feature'.

They only do it every now and again though. It's maybe analogous to making you put in your PIN after 6 or 10 contactless transactions in a row.

Even making you use the card reader for the reference does have a bit of logic behind it in that in certain bank to bank transfers that is the destination account. Usually just pa PITA though
