car water leak rust

Options
Hey
I purchased a car from a main dealer in January this year. A couple of months later I noticed rust along the boot lip.
I spoke to the garage annoyingly over the phone so not documented, and because of the current Covid situation we'd leave doing anything until the MOT in August. When I took the car in, the garage guy said the boot drain is missing, it's a common fault and there is no way they'd have sold a car with it missing. Told him I'd brought it at the beginning of the year, and had photo proof it was rusty in March. Basically the lip inside the boot fills up with rainwater, so it's rusted from the inside out.
I didn't fully check the lip of the boot when I brought the car, and don't know what I'm looking for to see there is a part missing, but was given a promise it was checked over but the team of skilled mechanics and no way that would have been missed.
They are now offering to replace the boot at a cost of two and a half grand, and maybe a 50% goodwill gesture.
Kinda lost as to where I stand with this, can anyone advise what I should do don't really see why I should pay for a fault that has been on this car for what looks like years.
thanks

What car and year is it?  Is it covered under the manufactures warranty?
  • Hey
Sorry it's a 66 plate, and not under the manufactures warranty.

It should be covered under the manufacturer's 12yr corrosion warranty.

    Hi OP

Main dealer - most usually sell only the very best used cars and go through a big check.
It is not your doing. Withouth getting angry again, phone, seek the top of the food chains number
and put it to that person that cars do not rust like that these days especially your type of ccar
and to go rusty like that must mean the rust was alreay there a few weeks earlier. Point out
that not everyone checks every corner of every used car and becuse of covid you used it less and only noted it when you wnet to clean, check etc.
Tell them how you have been impacted and would appreciate the garge corrected the fualt.

  • Thanks, the 12yr corrosion warranty isn't called corrosion, it's a anti-perforation warranty and doesn't cover water leaks or rust that starts from the inside.

If the "boot" is classed as "body" then they may be in luck.  I had a similar one with an Alfa a few years ago, the boot was rusty but it wasn't classed as part of the "body" so they swerved that one.  Daft of me to assume anything different.

Cheers, going to keep it all on email from now on so I have it documented.

You'd never expect rust on an Alfa of course.
