HSBC digital and physical key

Hi,
some weeks I downloaded the HSBC app to my phone, I have never used the app before as I always used the physical key to log in on my computer .
Now if I want to log in on my computer, the physical key has been disabled and I can only login by getting a code through the phone's app.
the thing is I don't want to depend on my phone to login, if one day I lose my phone or it's not working I won't be able to login to my account via my computer.

is this the way it is with HSBC? you need your phone no matter what? It shouldn't be , on MBNA account I don't need the app to login

You can still have the physical secure key but it is one or the other with hsbc.
I use the digital secure key for mine but hubby still has the physical secure key for his account.
Pros and cons to both. If you call hsbc customer services they can send you a new physical secure key and remove the authorisation for the digital one.

  • well, that sucks really, it's best to have both ways to access your account. It's quicker with the app but if that fails we should have also the other option. :/

HSBC's system is now secure than other banks that use the "standard" card readers - as  your SecureKey is specifically linked to your account.

So is the debit/credit card that you put in the "standard" card reader, unless I'm missing something?

The standard card reader lets you generate codes in advance of using them.
The SecureKey code is time sensitive in that it has to be used then or it expires. This method is more secure.

Can't you use phone banking with HSBC as an alternative like you can with FirstDirect?
