My Staffie cross girl (neutered) age 7 needs to diet. She weighs 25kg and should weight about 22.5 or 23 kg, I don't think she over eats so I need to find out the calories she needs and the calories in the food. She eats Wainrights wet food with mixer, I can't find the calories on dog food anywhere. I'll have to find this information or I'll have to cook and will need some low calorie recipes.  Any help on either would be appreciated.

You don't need to know the calories; just feed her 10% less than you normally do. She will start to loss weight. If she goes below 22.5Kg, feed her 5% more.
The comments I post are my personal opinion. While I try to check everything is correct before posting, I can and do make mistakes, so always try to check official information sources before relying on my posts.

That's what I do when Gitdog gets a bit portly. Cut down on the kibble and fill him up with veg instead. His dog food portion size goes up and down with his waistline.
You might also want to check the treats you are feeding outside of mealtimes.
Are you sure she is overweight though? I would never go on the weight itself, but on how much of a waistline you can see. Vets can get a bit hung up on figures, especially with the stockier dogs like bull terriers.
All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.

Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.

Certainly in cat food, it's the kibble that's got the calories. When I worked it out for our two, I was shocked at how much we were over feeding them on an average day. Thankfully they're now trending downwards on the scales!

I don't know if this will help you work it out: https://www.vetknowhow.co.uk/blog/how-do-i-work-out-the-calories-in-pet-food

  • Cabbage is your friend when it comes to shifting weight off a dog

On the food label it will say how much to feed a dog to maintain 22kg. You need to weigh that out and stick to it. If you have a hungry dog, then bulk up the meal with plain boiled cabbage
  • I have any answer for this case
    1. Balance your exercise regimen and rest time
    2. If the older dog is sedentary, adjust his diet
    3. Use plant-based foods instead of animals
    4. Take her to work out with you every breakfast, choose a gentle workout regimen
Good look for you and your friend ^^
  • I use tails food for our dog as we need to watch his weight as they are a breed that suffer with their joints. It’s a subscription kibble mixed to his needs that is delivered to our door. I find them really helpful and have always been really satisfied when I’ve telephoned them (had a couple of problems with his skin as a puppy and they changed the kibble to help with this). You can add his weight and activity levels on your web account and they will tell you the correct portion size to use (get a very nifty little measuring cup). You get a full breakdown of the ingredients and the mix and all their energies seem to go on the food rather than on packaging. I was really pleased last time I visited the vets when he told me as a vet, tails is rated very highly for quality food. Our Frenchie is about 15kg at the minute and it costs about £20 a month for him. If you feel like checking them out, I have a referral code ( that’s not why I’ve responded, I just like dogs - possibly more than most people oops 😬 and have been so impressed with these after having dogs all my life)  the code lets you get a months trial for about £1 so it might be worth you having a look at tails.com Referral code: BRU7WP6S2
  • Can I suggest you actually weigh the dried mixer  as you'd be surprised at the amount your actually giving him.

also when our beagle had to lose weight, we cut back drastically on the biscuit treats he was given and instead gave him cooked liver pieces.

Fill a hungry dog with lots of grated carrot! My dogs have always had veg & fruit and they are a healthy weight with a waistline. Other good veggies for them are : cauliflower ribs, broccoli stalks, kale stalks, finely sliced cooked cabbage (al dente) cooked eating apples (al dente.)
They only get home made sardine flapjack as treats  (I know exactly what goes in- no rubbish fillers) and then very rarely.

  • Much depends not how much she eats, but how much she moves. How much calories is spent. It's like people. He who does not move and eats a lot is fat ...
As an option. But again, movement ...
  • If you find that you are struggling with the food you are giving your pup and are looking for calorie controlled meals, one book I can recommend is the Lily's Kitchen cook book. It has a calorie list for all meals and there is a section where feeding dogs to obtain ideal weight is discussed. It may help, but one of the major things to consider with most dogs is the treats outside of meals, much like us humans  as cutting or changing these will likely reduce the calories.
