Registered keeper, car tax and insurance
Husband purchased a car from a garage in July requesting it to be in wifes name. Insurance arranged in wife’s name, with husband as second driver.
V5 arrives in husbands name. Garage say they will sort, and to give them back the V5 as otherwise if we send off the V5 it will show as another keeper. It’s October now, no V5, concerned that insurance in wife name, registered keeper and I can only assume road tax are in husbands name. If eventually Garage does sort this out and a new V5 turns up in wife name as originally requested, will road tax be affected? Also is insurance currently affected?

Why bother? V5 name has no bearing on insurance.1

Bear in mind Covid19 has caused massive backlogs at the DVSA.0 -
Assuming it's the garage's error, rather than the DVLA's, I don't see how it can be changed. But, as stated above, why does it matter? The V5C is not proof of ownership. No free lunch, and no free laptop0

One of our vehicles has the wife as the registered keeper but myself as the main driver with insurance policy on itScrapit said:Why bother? V5 name has no bearing on insurance.
Its usually a question asked on the insurance quote/info forms - makes no difference to the premium
You can change registered keeper to spouse (at least that I know of) online and instantly, we (I) just never got around to it0 -
Also has no bearing on road tax. It just means the reminders will be sent to whoever's name is on the V5. Presumably you live at the same address.0

Do not worry re road tax as that belongs to the car you are talking about. Therefore even when V5 iscorrected, you have no worries and next tax request will come in your wifes name.
The insurance will not be affected if when applied for you put in the correct answers as per insurance questions, EG, '
is the registered keeper the owner.'
you may want to call them and tell them of the blunder.
Who is the offical owner, IE who's name is the receipt in, I'm guess yours? If so all you want is the car in the wifes name and that will be corrected but if the bill of sale is in your name, the car is yours regardless of who is on the V5
Importantly, registered keeper is usually be regarded as the responsible person for parking tickets etc. As the registered keeper of a vehicle, there might also be some circumstances where you could be prosecuted for an offence, e.g. if you are permitting someone to use the vehicle knowing full well it is not insured or roadworthy but not the owner.
A traffic officer that we knew once told us that in the case of a car used by a married couple, ownership of any property is usually classed as joint and if the husband/wife was stopped driving the vehicle without insurance the officers would most likely accept that he/she was the joint owner and not look to the other partner for additional offences, such as owner permitting no insurance.

The fact is and an it is an imporant one.
It has every bearing on car insurance EG - car is written off - who gets the cash, the owner or the registered keeper that is not the owner,

The insurance will pay out to who is named on the policy.
It really is that simple.
Also when did you last get insurance? What company asked you about the v5? Time to back up your "facts".4 -

Esure 100% ask the question:
"Are you the registered keeper of this vehicle" (so in effect are asking about the V5)
Pretty sure it's a question on the meerkats site as well
There is zero price difference but I bet in the even of a claim it could be a very costly oversight1
