Tonik - Late Billing

I switched from Tonik at the end of my contract with them in January 2020.  Meter readings were provided and the final bill paid.  Imagine my disbelief when a bill came in last week - end of September - some 8 months later, out of the blue, for £260.  No explanation.  When I look online it adds up electricity and gas paid over the year and payments made and shows a balance of £260 owing.  If that’s correct, why wasn’t I charged at the time?  Can they do this if as it seems they must have made a mistake after I paid my final bill in good faith that nothing else was owing? Advice appreciated.
