Tonik - Late Billing

I switched from Tonik at the end of my contract with them in January 2020. Meter readings were provided and the final bill paid. Imagine my disbelief when a bill came in last week - end of September - some 8 months later, out of the blue, for £260. No explanation. When I look online it adds up electricity and gas paid over the year and payments made and shows a balance of £260 owing. If that’s correct, why wasn’t I charged at the time? Can they do this if as it seems they must have made a mistake after I paid my final bill in good faith that nothing else was owing? Advice appreciated.

If your check on the figures show that the Billing v Payments does indeed show £260 owing, I'm afraid that is what you must pay

Welcome to the forum. From Ofgem link above:Late final bill (does not apply to switches that happened before 1 May 2020)
'You’ll also get compensation from the supplier you are switched away from if they fail to send you a final bill within six weeks of your switch. It does not apply:
- to business energy customers.
- if an energy supplier has gone out of business.
Supplier fails to send a final bill within six weeks of a switch. - £30 compensation.'So assuming the bill is correct, you must pay.As a general point it is important to note that if a company makes a mistake(either in their favour or the customer) either party have up to 6 years to correct that mistake before the bill becomes invalid(there are specialist exceptions)

As Tonik have now gone bust, I would hold off paying until the receivers contact you, if ever.
