How to connect a 1.6 amp external USB DVD drive to a laptop?

Like most current laptops, my new HP Pavilion doesn't have a DVD drive. It has 3 USB3 ports.

I have removed the internal SATA DVD/BluRay drive (Panasonic UJ272Q) from my old laptop. It requires 5Volts and 1.6 amps. I want to use it as an external USB DVD drive.

What is the best way of doing this?

I'm thinking of a caddy that accepts a SATA drive with a USB connector to the laptop.

Presumably I will need a Y connector so I can connect it to 2 USB3 ports for power as each port is limited to 0.9 amps. Will that work properly?

Is there a better way of doing this?

Advice and suggestions would be appreciated.

Thanks

A man walked into a car showroom.
He said to the salesman, “My wife would like to talk to you about the Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
Salesman said, “We haven't got a Volkswagen Golf in the showroom window.”
The man replied, “You have now mate".

  • You could also (instead) get a caddy that has its own external PSU?

ebay has loads of cheap and no doubt poorly made USB2 caddies that have a USB cable for data plus a USB to power cable for power. No idea if the drive from your old laptop is compatible though.

I bought one for £12 on eBay.

It arrived today. It works perfectly so far.

It comes with two separate cables, one for power and another for power and data. The caddy is plastic but thick enough to be more than adequate.

The printed circuit board with the SATA sockets etc is typical of such inexpensive far east products from eBay but, provided it lasts, I am happy with it.

It will only get occasional use for ripping CDs to FLAC so it should last me many years.
