China Fund.

Hi,

trying to get Friday's price for First Sentier Greater China Growth B GBP Acc, was previously First State.

Last available price is 1218.03 on Wedneday 30/09.

Tried Trustnet/HL/II, all the same.

Did something change on 01/10, name change was some time ago, so not that,

Thanks.

ColdIron has hit the nail on the head.  If you look at their prospectus for Dealing Days:

    "

    In respect of FSSA Greater China Growth Fund, a day on which banks in London are open for business and on which the Hong Kong Stock Exchange is open for the business of dealing in securities, and/or such other day or days as the ACD may, with the approval of the Depositary, determine;

    "

Doesn't make sense to allow people to trade in any investment fund, when the underlying markets the fund invests in, are not open.

  • Hi,
    ah, could be, China holiday.
    Thanks.

Expensive for a china fund, OCF wise, but each unto their own.

    Hi,
    time for a switch, methinks.

Not necessarily, there's a reason you chose that particular fund and it fitted into your investment strategy

A fund is not just about their OCF, however for a china fund, I would have expected much greater allocation to China's star players.  But that's just my opinion.

Other China suggestions please?   I've been happy with Janus Henderson China Opportunities but would like to consider others if maybe cheaper.

Cheap doesn't mean better when it comes to investing in China.

You shouldn't pick a fund purely on fees.  If I told you I wanted to invest into a China fund, and all the information you gave me, was that I had two choices, Fund A had total fees of 1%, and Fund B 0.9%, on that information alone, I should pick Fund B right?

Now if you gave me additional information, that the 1% fund applied ESG principles(Environmental Social Governance - think socially conscious investing), and the 0.9% did not, would that change my choice - potentially yes.  I would be willing to sacrifice 0.1% return a year with a view I am helping to promote better companies.

Finally, what if the fund with the 1% fees, returned an average of 10% year on year over the past 5 years, and the fund with the 0.9% fees returned on average 7% over the same period, if I am solely concerned about my own profit, its a no brainer which one to go with.

You can also delve into the history of the investment managers making the decisions on behalf of investors in the fund, the investment management company that oversees the fund, and so on.

People invest in different funds in the same sector for different reasons.  Some perform better than others, some charge higher fees than others.  Ultimately you are picking a fund in a market you want to invest in, and hoping that they beat a cheaper tracker, or make better investment decisions based on your criteria.
