High energy bill before account ser up

  • Panel heaters are expensive to run.
Unfortunately, it sounds like you didn’t contact Eon when you originally moved in and left everything to your landlord. There is no point contacting him either to ask about the other flats’ usage and bills as this is like comparing running costs of cars ie a sports car to a 1 litre engine. You are being billed for your own usage and anything that generates heat and hot water is also the most expensive.
Please don’t complain to Eon over this as they will probably just laugh down the phone to you as it’s your mistake not theirs.
Be happy, it's the greatest wealth :)

The correct procedure would have been to contact EON the day you moved in to get the account in your name.
Give the meter reading and agree on a Tariff that would suit you.

If you were planning to change energy providers then that would have been one without exit fees.

Suspect from your posts that did not happen as you did not look at meter until now? There was nothing to really stop you taking a reading at move in, usually a photo of meter to prove actual read at that time. You did not need an account to read the meter to check how much electric you were using.

If they have put you on their standard expensive tariff and it has taken them 2 months to give you an account then still worth a complaint to be backdated to a cheaper tariff. If you have actually waited on them to contact you then perhaps not?

You are in an all electric flat that will be expensive to run, but being a new build should be well insulated.
Whatever supplier you go with ensure that you actually take monthly readings to compare with what they are billing you as per your smart meter, which might not even work with other energy providers.

A meter reading now of 03377 would on my tariff cost £412 so something is using power if you have basically nothing on?

No underfloor heating in bathroom? Long electric showers? Tumble dryer etc.
I took a meter reading the day they set our account up using the app as mentioned in my opening post. I could see the meter before that and the numbers on it but I couldn’t figure out how to translate that into a £ figure. Googled it to no avail but I must have been searching for the wrong thing.

Initially we were using the tumble dryer a fair bit but now we’re only using the wash cycle and only the tumble dryer for stuff that’s hard to dry on the maiden like towels, bedding etc which is maybe once a week. I’ve emailed the landlord to see if £100/month is what other flats are paying.

Whenever the in home display goes up from 3p/hour to like 55/60p, I’ve switched the hot water off and it instantly drops down again, so it’s definitely that. I can’t figure out why that’s costing so much even on automatic rather than permanently on. There is a way of changing its schedule to a custom one, but the automatic one is basically: off during the night, then during the day it comes on when it detects the temperature of the water in the tank is below a certain level, and that seems right. Just didn’t expect it to have to reheat it so often.
I could set the custom setting to come on in the morning say 6.30-10, then go off. Then back on 5-10pm or something but if we needed hot water during the day (both of us currently working from home too) we’d end up with no hot water!
The £ figure is obtained from your Tariff / Bill. Pence per kWh plus daily standing charge plus 5% vat.
What is your cost per kWh etc?

Your photo of meter looks like a 2nd generation smart, so should be able to be read by any other provider you choose.
Someone will correct me if mistaken.

From what you are posting it does indeed look like hot water costs. Even if you do reset to your figures above it still means that it will be constantly reheating for 8 1/2 hrs per day to cover water used? Do you use a lot during the day?

Personally I would consider trying an hour or so in morning and same in evening.

During the day the odd kettle on to wash mugs/cups etc.

Can you possibly post a photo of what type water heater / controls you have?

Other flats may be paying less or more it depends on the individuals lifestyle, so not really a meaningful comparison. Sorry.

You really don't have a leg to stand on. Firstly, you failed to capture an opening read on day 1, assuming that it will be 'near zero'. It won't have been, because the various contractors will have been using power to complete the fit out, as will your LL to prep the flat, decorate, furnish etc. It's impossible for you to prove what the actual read was, so you end up paying for their usage.
Secondly, you did nothing to contact the supplier for the first two months to open an account with them. They are not psychic, it's up to you to do this when you move in. So you have been billed for 3 months on expensive Standard tariff, the default.
A professional LL or LA will have taken and agreed readings with you upon entry, especially with a new-build,but yours failed to do so. Unfortunately, there is no requirement for them to do this, and once again, you are left with the consequences.
E.on have done absolutely nothing wrong.
If anything, you should claim against your LL for failing to give you proper instructions for the operation of the heating and hot water system: but then again you haven't been very pro-active in trying to find out.
PS: your LL will have no idea what level of monthly DD the other flats are paying: he doesn't see their bills.

    03377 at 11.58 and 03385 at 14.40 = WOW

You say panel heaters  - are they a flat panel or a "traditional"  water filled ones supplied by a huge boiler ?
Does that work out at approx £3300 per year at current usage? Surely I am wrong here? And heating not on yet.

    Edit:
Good point about boiler type. A lot of people get confused with boilers and water heaters these days. I naivley assumed individual electric water heater / tank and modern slim electric panel heaters?

Perhaps if OP posts photo it will be clear what is installed?

If it's a smart meter then the supplier should know the reading for when you moved in and should be accurate if no issue with the signal. Smets2 meters should be compatible with other suppliers but may not be just yet with a few.p There are still a lot of issues with the communications.
