How did WW get my new debit card details?

Options
I’ve recently had a new debit card issued, and had a couple of emails from Weight Watchers asking me to update payment details as they hadn’t been able to take payment. I’ve been wanting to cancel membership anyway so ignored emails. Their last email to me said they would try once more and if unsuccessful, would cancel my account. Thought nothing more of it only to discover today that they have taken a payment. How has this happened as I didn’t add my new card details? Logged into my WW account and sure enough, new card details are shown. Nobody else has access to my account? Any ideas?

  • You presumably signed up to a continuous payment authority, issuing a new card on the same account would make no difference. You can't rely on a contract lapsing, you need to cancel with them and get it in writing.

Agree, 'Continuous Payment' is in the small print, on many paid contracts, and it's up to the consumer to activate and manage the account it relates to.
Pleading ignorance only shows poor money/conduct/management.

Banks update your card details with the companies that take direct debits. Here's the first example I found online, there are probably many more:

When Barclays changed our sort code a while back, they shared this with all of our payees as well as the wife's payroll and my pension provider. I seem to remember a letter saying they would continue to do this for three years should someone try to pay in with the old code.

Same principle if your card is replaced if it expires or is lost and a refund comes back to it.  It'll find its way back to your account eventually.  Works both ways.

Banks DO NOT update retailer with new card details.... And Direct Debits have nothing to do with your card number.

That is done by Visa Account Updater, or Mastercard equivalent. Something retailers pay for.
In terms of NowTv. They request/update every week.
Quite why these companies send out emails asking people to update the card no, when they are going to do it is stupid. And makes many people think that not doing it means they will not have to pay, as often they are no longer using the service.
