I agree that a 30% increase is outrageous but he signed up to a plan that says prices can rise mid contract. That's exactly why I don't go with a company that says that about their broadband. I'm with PO for broadband and phone and have the £7 anytime call package. The broadband part is guaranteed not to rise mid contract but not the call package. I got the email to say my call package will rise to £10 on 2nd November. I phoned the number in the email (which apparently is a dedicated number about the price change). I told the guy, this is a 43% increase and wish my pension went up by that amount, he was totally disinterested and when I said I will leave because there are better deals, he said okay. I then phoned a freephone number which is on their website for existing customers wanting a better deal. He put me through to the price change department where the woman said they have to increase prices in order to maintain the service. I told her the same as I told the first guy, again no interest but in true MSE style, I didn't give up. I phoned the number I've always had for PO. Spoke to a lovely lady who said, on the last phone call I should have been put through to retentions. She even looked up the summary of the last phone call and the woman had said I was quite happy with what she had said, which was totally untrue. From the time of the price rise, I will have 9 months left on my contract, she said as she can't credit £3 each month, she's giving me £27 credit (the 9 months times the £3 increase). In other words, I'll be paying the same as I do now. She also said when my contract is ending to phone again for a better deal, just a shame I won't get her again.

We need a phone line rental/calls only deal (our broadband is wireless relay, because the broadband over the phone line is far too slow here).  PO is one of very few providers still offering phone line only deals, and the MSE Broadband Unbundled deal checker offers no providers for our postcode.  So it looks like PO Homephone have us over a barrel.

We could go with VOIP through our wireless relay broadband supplier.  But we have no mobile phone signal here, so imagine another lockdown and the internet going down.  No means of contacting the outside world!

This passed me by until my bill came in today. It’s gone up £1.30 because my evening and weekend call package has gone up. I’m in contract until 8 January 2021 so it caught me by surprise. Their customer service was quite dismissive of “only a £1 increase” but I’ve done a deal and renewed for another 12 months at only 10p more a month. Of course that means nothing if they increase costs again!
