WiFi Problem

Options
We have Sky, broadband, and just lately, we have had issues with the WiFi. It randomly, goes off. If I'm on my phone, it connects to 4g, or even other services. Obviously, on a tablet, or laptop, signal is lost altogether. It doesn't last long, but it happens quite often during the day. I don't want to ring Sky, just yet, as their router packed in a while ago, so we boutght another one, which has been fine. Is there something, I should be looking at. Anything wired, like the pc, or Sky tv, is fine, it's just the wifi.

If you keep losing wifi, then your new router, or at least its settings, isn't fine.

You could try changing wireless channels, or it may be a fault with the router itself.
  • Funnily enough I have been experiencing the same issues lately up in the North of England (EE broadband).
It seems to happen circa 7pm most days when I am getting tuned in to a football match on Now TV. The internet just slows down or the connection is lost altogether.
I've speculated that it could be "peak" demand at that time of day, and/or related to the ongoing roll out of City Fibre broadband in the area at the same time as BT Openreach doing work on their cabinets. Don't know the cause but its solved every time I reboot the router.
I've checked downlaod and upload speeds which seem quite normal and in accordance with the EE tariff I am paying for.

Thanks zx81. I know how to get to the router settings, but what am I looking for to change?
  • Mostly WiFi channel setting is best left on auto but sometimes when there is poor Comms or interference manual selection of channel can be better. Done usually via router admin and WiFi settings.
It can be useful in your tablet to monitor the signals when problems occur. Download from store WiFi analyser (you can then see signal strengths and any interfereing signals) an also a 'ping' app such as PingTools. That gives you options to investigate connections response time (latency), error rates and speed at any particular time. Poor WiFi signals can have a big impact on the former and latter and then the apparent speed or showing why some Comms just time out.
Things tend to be cumulative with Comms errors and latency but if all is fine from your pc (you can ping from there too) it points more towards WiFi issues.
Nevertheless I too am experiencing general Comms issues on the net probably due to overall capacity problems. I regularly use a site in Belgium (though getting there who knows where the signal goes via!) and the website address change used in PingTools to make the test specific. Often Google.com is used as the default!

Downloading Inssider might be worth a shout to see which channels have the most congestion but tbh if the wifi fully "goes off" as you suggest I'd be more inclined to think that your router is up the spout. When was the last time you did a reset on the router, how old is it?

The router, is about a year, and a half, old. The wifi, doesn't go off totally. It comes back after a minute or so, unless we restart the router.

    Always reboot router first.
