HSBC CIFAS

Hello All
Not posted for a few years but looking for some advice regarding a CIFAS marker.

Firstly thanks to this forum over the past 5 years I've managed to get my debts paid off and looking to the future.

I'm finally in a position to apply to apply for a mortgage and before i put any application in I've been checking all my credit files and CIFAS for anything out of the ordinary.

My DSAR from CIFAS has come back with a Catagory 4 Application Refused marker from HSBC in November 2015.

I've never had a account with HSBC or made a application with them.

I've wrote to HSBC with my details to get to the bottom of this and they've asked for my account details, something I don't have since I've never held a account with them.

They've replied that they can't find anything that matches my details on their system. I'm waiting to see what else they reply with.

My question is if they can't find any details on their systems is this grounds for getting it removed? I've got all my credit reports and important letters saved from the past 6 years and there's nothing on them from HSBC, no search's on my reports or any letters from HSBC

Sorry for the long post.

Cheers
Scott

Have you provided them with a copy of the CIFAS letter and asked them to remove the marker as it doesn't relate to you?
Mortgage started 2020, aiming to clear 31/12/2029.
  • Hi MovingForwads
I've sent the page of the CIFAS report that shows their marker, and said if nothing can be found then can they remove the marker.

What I cant understand is how they've put a marker on CIFAS for me if they can't find any details of me, not even a application.

    Many Thanks
    Scott

Category 4 I believe is where someone has used your name but with some inconsistent details that don't match the fraud registers so no account is opened. So it's highly likely that only a rejected application will be on their systems, hence no account details. The details you've provided will likely not match what was used in the fraudulent application so it's easy to see how things could get muddled.

I'd submit a SAR to HSBC and see what details they do have relating to any accounts or account applications. I agree that if they have no details for you then how could they have issued the CIFAS?

  • Hi I’m facing a difficult situation in regards to a account that was opened in my name around 4 years ago I’ve only come to realise of it recently when applying for a new bank account etc which they refused and advised to do a cifas said check it had come back as a account was opened n misuse of facilities etc first party, and where it asked what year was you living at this address from it stated the year the account was opened which is deffo wrong same with number and email address etc so I’ve contacted the bank in regards to this and made a investigation to it as they said it’s most likely identity fraud Then they wrote me back saying the claim you have made has been revisited and and unfortunately the decision has been made not to treat this account as impersonation due to some of the transactions which was 2 dwp payments, then it made sense to me there there was a time where I lost my wallet with I’d inside national insurance number etc and I was out of work at the time claiming job seekers allowance and my dwp 2weeks payments was missing so I phoned them up to confirm if they have the right account details for me they said wrong details to me and I told thats not my details update my details please etc. So now how do I go about this do I send a letter to the bank or back to cifas because surely if some one has access to open a account they have someone’s full details they can do that and change a persons account details with the dwp as its impersonation, please help this has left me stuck as I cannot apply for credit or anything as small as a phone contract thank you very much

Punctuation, paragraphs and capitalisations don’t go amiss here.

Can you break it down into more edible chunks?

    Basically in a nutshell:
    • OP wants to apply for a mortgage but has discovered a CIFAS from HSBC for application fraud
    • OP has discovered that an application for a current account was made in their name with false details but was not made by OP
    • The account that was opened was misused (it's not clear whether there is also a CIFAS for misuse of facility)
    • HSBC believe OP applied for it due to payments in received in their name from DWP
    • OP claims that their ID was stolen and used to redirect benefit payments to the opened account
