NS&I account number is too long

Our NS&I Income Bond Account number is 9 digits (and no leading 0). Both our banks Barclays and 1st Direct only accept 8 digits. We've tried missing off the first number (and the last! ) but the banks can't recognise them. NS&I help have no answer to what must be a common problem - and we've hung on the phone for 50 minutes only to get cut off - any ideas please?

You could use your debit card instead.

Sounds like you are using the 9 digit NS&I bond number when you should be using the 8 digit account number. The NS&I bond number should be used in the reference fieldSee this recent thread on the same issueNB Do not use you NS&I Holders number1

Have you tried doing it all the "other way round". I mean----log into NS&I , get your account online, then transfer money from/to NS&I to your bank account ?0

Scroll to "Pay Money in"

You use the NS&I bank number - giving your account number as the reference, they'll move the money into your account (hence the 2-3 days delay)1 -
Ah - thanks. Using the words Account number for both their and your account number is a bit confusing - or maybe it's just me. But thank you for pointing us in the right direction.0

It's fairly common. Many building societies use a clearing bank for their banking. So when transferring money to your account with them, you use* their clearing bank's sort code* their (the building society's) account number* your account number as the reference (to allocate the money from the BS acount into your account).NS&I is similar.1

Thank you everyone. I don't think they make it clear in their instructions - well it is once you know but to the newbie we need help from people such as yourselves. Talking about a lot of money for a short time (before rates go down) so I needed the assurance it will work and quickly. So thank you again.0

The instructions seem fairly self explanatory to me.
Did you know? You can pay money into your NS&I account by bank transfer or standing order. With most banks, you only have to set up the details once and then it's quick and easy to make further payments. Find out how
When I click "Find out how" I get the following:

Don't forget to move your money back out again on the 22nd November
