What are my rights to protect my property from flooding that worsens flooding for a neighbour?

What are my rights to protect my property from flooding, even if that causes flooding to worsen for a neighbour?
Am I within my rights to install flood defence or could I find myself in legal trouble if that person’s property gets damaged from
diverted water and subsequently sues me for damages?

Work with your neighbour to find a solution that doesn’t cause increased problems for either of you?All shall be well, and all shall be well, and all manner of things shall be well.
Pedant alert - it's could have, not could of.0
