What are my rights to protect my property from flooding that worsens flooding for a neighbour?

What are my rights to protect my property from flooding, even if that causes flooding to worsen for a neighbour? 

Am I within my rights to install flood defence or could I find myself in legal trouble if that person’s property gets damaged from
diverted water and subsequently sues me for damages?
