Coronavirus delays on windows and doors?

Options
Been waiting for months to have our porch windows fitted and a composte door ready for winter, unfortunately because the door has still not been sent from the supplier it is delayed until November. They are blaming corona but my wife thinks they are taking me for granted in favour of larger jobs, i'm hoping this is not the case and wondering if to cancel or set them a deadline. I signed the contract with them to do this but i wonder if that contract could be broken for constant delays.
We had the quote in the summer in order to get a warm door on before winter comes and i really do want them to do the job as they are great at what they do.
My wife thinks i should tell them to shove it but i'm thinking that there would be similar delays if i go with another company!
Enjoy everyday like it's your last!

There is a bit of a supply issue.

I've not had to wait 'months' but lead times are definitely longer.   It did take over a month just to get one replacement window made that we'll be fitting ourselves.

Lead time on aluminium is weeks longer than I'd like but that may just be a popularity thing.

  • Frank, if you can get the same items supplied more quickly, then give the original company a final deadline that they promise to adhere to. But I think you'd need to have a guaranteed alternative lined up before getting narky with them.

We had a delay a few months back on our bifold and windows due to C-19 (factory on shifts), but it only added a few weeks to the wait.

I had the quote on the 4th of July to fit 6 weeks later however since then it has been all about this style of composite door the wife wanted which they are sapparently struggling to get. They said they have the windows ready to go but they have to buy this door from another company. They don't want to fit the windows without the door as it is just one quote.

Yeah i know what you mean, i don't really have an alternaltive lined up and although my blood is boiling i'm trying not to get angry in case i blow the whole thing with them. I know the company they are waiting for the door from and so i wonder if their hands are tied waiting for this company to send this order to them.

  • Sounds like a fair excuse, Frank. It's a tough time for many folk, so if you can chill and cut them some slack, I'm sure they'd be grateful.

You aren't exactly open to the elements, are you?! It'll almost certainly be sorted well before the worst weather comes along.

But, by all means, keep on at them so they won't let you slip down the fitting order because they think you're too reasonable. At the same time, I think it's fair to assume they are being honest about the reason, so there's nothing to be gained by causing stress to either them or yourself.

One day you'll look back at this and laugh...

Sash UK who were I believe a major supplier of doors and windows went into administration in June 2020. I believe this caused huge problems.  Seems a combo of covid and sash has caused the backlogs.
I ordered windows late August with a 3 week lead in - they arrived 2 weeks ago but my two composite doors which had a lead in of 5 weeks are now not arriving until early/mid Nov.
