Inconvenience payment

Had a barclaycard years ago which was never fully paid up due to serious illness.    Now had a letter from Barclaycard saying about refund of default fees etc. and I was due a payment of £85 which they would put to offset balance - I have no problem with that But    They also want details of my present current account (non Barclays) so that they can pay into it  an inconvenience payment.
Being super paranoid I do not think I should give them this information in case this is some kind of scam, but, on the other hand being a disabled pensioner now, it would come in very handy if genuine,
If this is genuine, why would they just not put all the money to offset the debt?    I am really confused, so any help would be much appreciated.
Many Thanks

If there is more than £85 of debt then instruct them to pay it towards your outstanding balance.

Remember the old days of writing cheques? You remember that at the bottom of every single one was your account number and sort code? Think of every person you've therefore previously revealed these details to... probably a bit late to get worried about it now.

Phone them, or ask for it to go towards your current balance, or ask for a cheque.

Sounds like a similar thing to your letter.  I'm not surprised competition isn't automatically paid against an outstanding debt, it should be paid out to the customer. It's only interest and charges that should be offset against it.

People have very short memories about cheques, or they didnt realise that for decades they were already handing out their sort code and account number to allcomers like confetti.

On this basis alone, the opening poster is being overly paranoid ;)

    They are not allowed too.
Same as PPI payments could not be made against any monies owed.

Yeah, but there wasn't so much fraud and scams back than, at least not mentioned all the time in the media and forums, so it was not something I would have thought about back then.
Now that everything has become digital and online, it's easier to gain access to someones account so it makes people paranoid.

It's good that you are being careful - but in this case you're likely being overly paranoid. You know you had a barclaycard, you know it defaulted, you know you didn't pay it all off - so a letter to offer the above based on the facts as outlined is less likely to be any kind of scam. Get your details sent off, get the payment, smile.

Except cheque fraud was a massive problem.
I can remember one year in the 90's where we used to get well over a hundred cheques a day made out to various councils from stolen or counterfeit books.

It is more harder now than then for someone to gain access to anyone's account. Due to increase in security.

Gaining a sort code & account number means all they can do is set up a direct debit.
