A ¼" drive socket might be a bit slimmer than some of the other options you've looked at.In the past, I have ground down a socket to fit in a very tight space - If you have access to a grinder or belt sander, it may be an option.Any language construct that forces such insanity in this case should be abandoned without regrets. –

You could always try using a screwdriver and a hammer ,put the blade of the screwdriver on the edge of the nut and tap it with the hammer till the nut turns then use your fingers to remove it.1

Long socket will remove that easily or even a short socket and an extension bar
Long nose pliers would undo it too , do you plan to do it up again ?1 -
A spinner should do it, Google 7mm spinner.Tall, dark & handsome. Well two out of three ain't bad.1

Thanks very much for your suggestions. I'm going to ask around my friends and neighbours to see if anyone has something I can scrounge.

What small writing!martindow said:Hi, I'm trying to find a slim box spanner or some other tool to undo the nut you can see in the pictures. It is in a very tight recess and box spanners I've looked at are made of metal that is far too thick to fit down. The nut is 6mm or 7mm and the recess is about 30mm from top to bottom. Has anyone any suggestions on what I could use?
