Hi
What's the best credit file to use in your opinion. I normally go to Experian but I resent having to make the monthly £14.99 payment just to see the occasional full file.

You need to check all of them. There's no 'best' as they are all used by lenders.
Just do it for free via MSE Credit Club (Experian), Clearscore (Equifax) and Credit Karma (TransUnion).

Don't pay them a penny, all the info is free. Just check all 3 as different lenders report to different CRAs, some report to all of them, some to only one or 2.1

As above - request copies of your "statutory" credit reports from all 3 CRAs - Experian, Equifax and TransUnion. This is free. Alternatively use the free third-party services MSE Credit Club (Experian), ClearScore (Equifax) and Credit Karma (TransUnion).
Different lenders report to different CRAs so you need to check all of them anyway to have a complete picture of your credit history.0
