Incorrect car new car details held by insurance companies

I purchased car insurance in April and unfortunately had a prang into a bollard which was paid out.  In September I bought the new Honda JAZz Crosstar. When I called to change the vehicle details I was told they only have a 1446 cc on their list and not 1448cc. As this is a brand new model there is only one choice and that is the 1448cc. Insurance company were insistent on them not having a 1448 and therefore would not insure it.  Basically the details that insurance companies are holding is incorrect as 1446cc. Log book says 1448cc.  Brochure says 1448cc.  Insurance company will not refund me the remaining money because I had a prang and claimed but I had no choice but to cancel my insurance.
1.  How can I get the refund
2.  How do you get the info held by insurance companies corrected.
I’m sure I’m not the only one to come up against this problem.

thanks

  • Make a formal complaint with the insurance company, after 8 weeks or if deadlock is agreed you can go to the ombudsman.

2cc difference in engine capacity can only be an error in transcription somewhere down the line, especially given that there is only one mechanical setup offered in the UK. BTW, Honda's own website refers to it as 1498cc... https://www.honda.co.uk/cars/new/jazz-hybrid/accessories.html#configurator/modal/fullspecs But even 52cc difference is still just a transcription error, given it's the only option in the UK. When it comes to this bit, though... You mean you can't cancel your April-inception policy, having tried to change car during the duration of the policy, because there was a claim on the old car between April and September? And now you don't want to change car with them because of this trivial error, so you think you should be able to cancel?

No, you can pretty much never cancel part-way through a policy if there's been a claim. I'll bet it says as much in the Ts & Cs of your policy.

If you mean that you've bent the Jazz already, and they're trying to get out of paying because of this minor error, then that's one to escalate to the financial ombudsman.

You won't be getting a refund as you have made a claim against your policy.

Ask the insurer what they want Honda call it a 1.5  then go with what the insurer says.  Possibly follow that up with a query when you receive your updated policy.  I wouldn't sweat it too much.

    Dear OP
Sorry to hear about your problems.
You want an honest answer and IMHO, going by what you have posted, I'm with your insurance co.

Apologies, but why did you "have to cancel insurance"?

Why are you giving details of the car at all? They take the registation plate and bring back the details that the DVLA hold. As long as your V5 is correct then the insurance will be, if the V5 is wrong then you've that issue to deal with too.

Thanks for all your comments. I did say it was a 1.5 but they wouldn’t accept it, they wanted to know what the cc was and I told them 1448 but they said they only have 1446 on their system, even though there has never been a 1446!  Also it had not been registered although I had the reg no at the time of me calling and because they would not accept the 1448 I had no option but to cancel it and go somewhere else.  I would never had changed insurance company but they gave me no option.

You wont get the money back, as you had a total loss so your wouldn't of been entitled to a refund, but you would of been able to use the rest of the policy for another car.  Now that its cancelled I would forget about it.  Daft to have them not insure it for the sake of their system saying 1446 and you saying 1448 - doubt it would of made any difference if you agreed with their figure - both appear to be incorrect as if you do a search on the DVLA site of other cars the cc is 1498.

What does the DVLA site say your car is?
