I don't think the Gas meter's number is relevant as over the years the meter in any one household can be changed several times.
What matters is the Meter Point Registration Number. ( MPRN ) - This is allocated to the property by the Gas Network Co. who installed the pipework to the house - It is unique to that dwelling, lasts for forever and no supplier can supply without knowing it.

It appears the MPRN was 'Lost' somehow when the gas was installed and I think the OP's best bet is to keep safe a record of the efforts made to find a supplier, and then forget the problem.

A problem my DiL had may be of some comfort
New Gas supply installed by BG, but after 6 months no billing had been received, and when asked BG denied all knowledge - Contacted EDF who were happy to supply and did, but they could only start their billing from the meter read showing on the day they started the account

12 months I've been trying to get someone to take my supply on and they don't want to because they know there will be a debt attached to the meter. I did have a company that was going to help but the last I was dealing has now left and I'm back to square one.  I have all my meter readings and want to pay a supplier so I'm not doing anything illegal in my mind!  I've been told this is the only way forward to get new meter that will then be registered.
If the supply has no MPRN and is shipperless, then there can't be any debt on it. Or, rather, there is theoretical debt, as the gas has undoubtedly been used (for years it seems), but since no single company can claim to own the debt, it can never be billed, as there is no-one to bill it!
Even if the MPRN did miraculously turn up, the absolute maximum you could be back-billed is 12 months, or to the first day of your occupation-whichever is the latter.
