Is it fraud?

My son recently passed away and when i was clearing out the flat which was in my name but he was living there, i found at least 3 credit cards in my name, and catalogues which i was none the wiser about. I went online to the MET Police who informed me that they could not help as he is no longer living, so i then contacted the fraud agency who said it was not a matter for them, i am so confused as to what to do, any ideas please x

It's not clear what you are trying to achieve, as the post is a bit thin on detail. The police won't be interested as there is no one to prosecute.

I'm assuming there are balances on the cards and catalogues. You could report the frauds to the individual companies, but proving you didn't take them out might prove difficult.

Best you run a credit check on yourself chop chop, see what else he had done on your behalf.  Sorry for your loss though.

If the cards all have zero balance and he had been paying them every month then I wouldn't dwell on it, if you have balances then either accept they are your debt and pay them or go down the fraud route, which it is/was, and try and get them written off.

To what extent was the flat in your name?  You presumably weren't on the electoral roll there but were you named on council tax, utilities, etc, and was there a formal tenancy agreement in place?  Questions should obviously be asked about the level of ID verification involved in opening credit accounts in your name at that address, but as above the creditors will take some persuading that you knew nothing about them....

Sorry for the loss & the mess you now find yourself in.
Does Son have the same name's as you?.
Clearly you need to contact all the companies involved and explain the situation.
I would be checking the likes of experian to see just what he had ben up to.

Check your credit reference agency files to see what accounts are recorded in your name - compare that to those accounts that you know are in your name - and see what else is listed that you know you didn't apply for/open. Then look to see the last reported balance on those accounts to see what's outstanding (the figures may not be totally up to date - but will give an indication). Where have you been living if you've not been in the flat that was in your name?
