CAN I TELL COLLEAGUES I AM GOING THROUGH THE CONSULTATION PROCESS?

Options
I was told yesterday that my job is at rick of redundancy and asked not to talk to anyone about it - is this law or just them asking me not to? Also am I allowed to take a colleague in with me to the consultation meeting?

If they have specifically told you not to then you could go down the route of misconduct if you discuss it .

What is the advantage of having a 3rd party present during the meeting ?

  • Having a colleague present would help with emotional support and to take notes for me.
I appreciate they have asked me not to but I'd like to know if it is law or just a polite request

Are you in a union? I would think that you could seek external advice
  • No I'm not in a union. I would like someone with me for moral and emotional support.

It is not the law but as others have said, it may be misconduct if you disobey them and it certainly isn't likely to be beneficial - if they are consulting to decide whether or not you are going to be selected for redundancy then deliberately doing something they have asked you not to is not a sensible thing to do.
You can *ask* whether you can have someone accompany you, but as it is not a disciplinary process I don't think you have a right to be accompanied. If you are nervous, make some notes ahead of time of anything you wat o sk them or anything you want to raise in terms of the selection process.
All posts are my personal opinion, not formal advice Always get proper, professional advice (particularly about anything legal!)
