HELP! Let Alliance tennant credit checks with a recent default

Hi all,
I am looking to rent a property through a Letting Agency that uses LetAlliance as a referencing agency.
The only problem is my credit is looking ropey due to a default from a paypal credit account that occurred in February last year that I only just found out about (perhaps I should appeal it as I wasn't notified, possibly due to moving).
The problem is I currently live with family who's moving plans hinges on me being able to rent in the next 1-2 months. This will be my second tenancy as I currently share rent responsibilities with them.
Has anyone been through this recently? After doing some research, I am aware that the laws changed at some point last year to allow tenant referencing companies (Open Api thing) to get far more detailed information from credit report.
It's worth noting that I recently started a high paying job and can comfortably pass any rent affordability checks for this particular property.
Does this change mean they will now see my default and fail the check because of it?
Thanks in advance!
