Shiply Courier - is the item insured?

Hi,
I've purchased a glazed welsh dresser on ebay and agreed with the seller to use a courier.  I found a courier on shiply and accepted the quote.

I then received multiple messages asking if I wanted to pay for packaging at £15 otherwise the item is not insured against damage.  I've not had one of these requests before.

I have repeatedly asked the courier for payment details and if they have many breakages so I can assess the risk as this feels like a hidden extra.  Wish I had the original quote so I can check the t&c's.

The item is due to be delivered on Friday so it might be fine.  Have I made a mistake in not paying for packaging?

Thanks in advance for any advice.
Bob

  • It's hardly a hidden extra if it's optional and the price for it is set out.

Like all insurance, it's a gamble.  Whether £15 is worth it largely depends on the value of the cabinet.  Personally, if the dresser is worth more than £100 I'd have taken the insurance.  Anything less I wouldn't have bothered.

You said the magic word "glazed". Expect to find a term and condition in the courier's paperwork which excludes glass and ceramics, no matter how well packed, and no matter how much you pay :(
