In Denmark many banks apply negative interest rates to balances above the equivalent of 100K euros.

It is probably worth noting that it is often forgotten that the UK has one of the better savings environments in Europe .
Normally savings interest rates available and the tax breaks of Cash Isa's are just not available in other countries . Ireland being a good example .

The risk to cash is inflation. You will need to obtain interest rates above inflation to preserve the spending power of what you have put by. Going forward, the probability is that it will not be possible to do that for much longer and your savings will be eroded.
If you end up only able to get negative rates then you have the option of zero rates with it all under the mattress .

My answer won't give you any comfort, it's just the analysis I give you..._

Negative interest is not a problem if inflation is also negative.

1% interest and 3% inflation, means your pot is losing 2% of its value each year.
-1% interest and -1% inflation, means your pot is maintaining its value.

Negative interest rates are extremely unlikely, though nobody can give you a cast iron guarantee.

I'd like to see a bank try applying negative rates for savers - would be tremendously entertaining
