What sort of speed camera is this? Will I be fined?

Options
Hi there,
Please no bashing - I stupidly was doing over 30mph in what I thought was a 40mph zone.. I went round a bend and saw a camera straight ahead of me, facing me on the other side of the road, there were line markings on both my side and the opposite directions side.. I slowed right down quickly to 20mph just before the lines and went through the lines very slowly, the lines stopped just infront of the camera on the other side.

I didn't see any flashes from the camera and there was also no camera warning signs in the lead up to it..

The camera is positioned around a bend on the other side of the road on an A road, I was heading out of the village and the camera is pointing towards the village (it goes from a 40mph zone to a 30mph zone and then a camera)

My question is, do you think I've been caught? and what type of camera is it? SpeedcamerasUK say its a gatso but it doesn't look like one?

It looks like a red light camera. But if no traffic lights then could be a rear facing camera? as in link below.

This does look like the latest model of Gatso. Definitely not a traffic light camera.

With these, there has to be a secondary check, which is the two photos taken as the car crosses the lines, 0.5 seconds apart. The speed calculated from that, has to be within 10% of the speed recorded by the radar beam which captures the approaching vehicle.

So if you didn't get flashed, it's unlikely that anything will happen. They have 14 days to send a Notice of Intended Prosecution (NIP) to the registered keeper, requiring the keeper by law to name the driver.

I have been providing assistance, including Lay Representation at Court hearings (current score: won 57, lost 14), to defendants in parking cases for over 5 years. I have an LLB (Hons) degree, and have a Graduate Diploma in Civil Litigation from CILEx. However, any advice given on these forums by me is NOT formal legal advice, and I accept no liability for its accuracy.
  • PRetty sure they are not type approved to detect oncoming vehicles, so if you were on the LHS as viewed in the picture above, you should be fine. It is not an average speed camera.

Thanks! I definitely didn’t get flashed, my speed dropped to 20 before I approached the lines and I was staring at the camera as I drove towards it..

ive been back to have a look and there’s no speed camera warning signs in the lead up to it on my side of the road, only beforehand on the other side of the road where the camera is

Yes, having done a ridiculous amount of research since, it does look more like a speed curb camera than any of the others out there, just bizarre of all cameras they’d put a red light one going into a village from 40-30. Why not just a normal Gatso?

But yes, no traffic lights at all

Thank you, I was on LHS - approaching camera
  • I do feel like I wouldn’t be as worried if there weren’t white lines on both sides. Why would they have it on both side if they’re not checking speed of oncoming traffic? Is it to do with rear facing vehicles overtaking?
