Is it normal for the travel insurer to ask for bank account details at the beginning of the investigation? We didnt fly to Portugal because at the time there was a FCO status that only essential travel should take place. I contacted AA travel insurance and they referred me to AXA as their underwriter who sent the below;
To progress you claim please could you provide the following information:
· Original booking confirmation for the flights
· Confirmation no refund or voucher has been issued by airline (eg. airline email)
· In preparation for payment - please provide us with your bank account number and sort code
I'm just wary of giving out bank details like this. Many thanks!

How else would they pay you? Most companies have moved away from cheques in the post. It's a large financial company asking, not some dodgy website. Might look odd if you refuse?1

If you’re sure the request is from the insurance company then I can’t see a downside. Mine sent me a cheque, which was a pain.1

There isnt much anyone can do with a sort code and account number. People happily handed these out for years to all manner of people when they dished cheques out like confetti for decades.
And before someone brings up the Jeremy Clarkson thing, all direct debits can be recalled.1 -
Thanks everyone! My neuroses got the best of me0
