How much rent should I pay my parents??

I could only afford a "spring roll" from the Chinese, not a proper takeaway, and I was earning £50. Beer was definitely >£1.00 in my local. I'm jealous.....

I can't remember how much I earned (it was low because I was at Uni and only in part time employment) but, back in the late 70's early 80's I gave my parents £25 per month.  I still had plenty left over to run my car, pay for a couple of nights out at the weekend and save a little.
On the day of my wedding my father gave me a little book.  When I looked at it it was a passbook for the Nationwide.  Every single £25 payment I had given my parents was in there plus the interest and a bit extra my parents had put in.  It was a wonderful wedding present since we had so little back then.

I think the advice about speak to your parents is the best. We know nothing about your family circumstances.

Purely for comparison though around 2003-2006 I started work earning £12k per year and my parents asked for £200 a month. No idea what beer cost, but on Thursday nights we went to a bar that did 20 shots in test tubes for £20. Happy days.
