Excessive Gas Meter Readings?

Options
Hello all, hopefully someone can shed some light on either what im doing wrong or whatever is happening.

I moved into a new flat 16/09 and the reading was xx06404, now just 13 days later my gas meter says the reading is xx11252.
The meter is m^3 so it would seem absurd that I could manage to consume this much gas, it just doesn't make sense. I had a contractor out to check for boiler leaks and it seemed fine (the day after i moved in). The gas meter doesn't move much when the boiler is on its "auto" mode, but when i change the boiler off from auto to ON, the meter readings go up quite excessively.
I dont really know what to think, the only other thing to note is that the control panel for the heating/hot water has a non-functioning LCD display (and had a contractor out to check that the heating and hot water DO work).

Any ideas?

Where's the decimal point in those readings?

You ignore the readings after the decimal point when reading your meter.

Have you also readings from the electric ?

If a dial meter the last three will probably be decimals and in red, or bounded by a red box i.e
    https://meters.co.uk/products/smart-gas-meter/ and are ignored.
If so use is just shy of 5 cubic metres, 50-60 kWh, not excesssive for a couple of weeks.
  • Are you sure it's not gone from 00064 to 00112. That's about 4 units a day which is about normal. It's physically impossible to have used nearly 5000 units as (most) gas meters can only use 6 units an hour max.

Have you been in contact with the present supplier yet ?  If so what readings did you give them ?

Edit - Just done my end of month reading - its obvious on my meter - a definite decimal point followed by 3 digits in a much smaller font.

Some meters have a comma instead of a decimal point, which is a bit daft when used in the UK.
This would be read as 12757 m3.

So your readings appear to have risen in 13 days from xx064 to xx112? average use of 3.7 units per day. So not excessive.

What is your electric readings? Read the same way.

  • Looks like another schoolboy error in not reading meters correctly; hope you realise now OP the correct way to read a meter.
