Finding the right account

  • @Mighty swordfish, the issue is how the money is spent that I need to control plus no Direct Debit/OD facility. This is a functioning adult who still needs a card to pay for food and beverages or get cash out of a ATM for incidentals such as Taxi's.. but.. because of the diagnosed impulsive spending condition might sign up for a boat or car on the drip with a DD, or try and swap utilities etc.. all of which has left my parent in significant debt so far. I did talk to their bank and was only offered a basic current account which still as DD facility; the same as most pre-paid cards I have come across.
  • Sounds very tough for a solution. Hope you find something.
  • What about a savings card for ATM use and a gift card for food shopping. I know that Sainsbury's offer a meal ticket card which comes with two cards. One is for the person who is spending on the card, and the other is for the person who preloads the card when necessary, marketed as a card for students where a parent loads the card with money.

  • @ Colston. I have looked at Stirling but it has the ability for the card holder to set up DD's.

Another avenue I am exploring is Go Henry albeit only designed for under 18's.

Any current account allows the account holder to set up SOs etc.

If you want a Go Henry type solution, there are plenty of prepaid cards about - but where would you hold your parent's money, from which you want to load the card? I suppose in a current account, to which you would not give them access?

That's why I did suggest Starling as that's the only account I am aware of which has 2 debit cards on a sole account, and where the 2nd debit card can not spend more than is loaded onto the card. So you could simply give your parent the card but not the app access to the actual account.
  • @ Frogletina, thanks I'll look into that
