Hello all we booked flights with BA to travel in may 2020 to Los Angeles. We then had to amend our dates of travel and paid the extra fees to do so.
Four or so weeks before travelling BA then cancelled the rearranged dates due to covid and we have just received a refund. The refund is less the extra charges we had to pay when amending the travel dates. I have complained to BA stating that I didn’t cancel the flights, they did however they have come back refusing to refund the costs we paid to amend the flights. They are calling them a penalty fee.
Had I cancelled the flights then I would have understood that we would have lost the additional cost but again BA cancelled our flights.
Is there any point in pursuing this or are BA correct in not refunding me the full amount and only the original flight cost?

Sorry if I’m not grasping this correctly but the flights that you amended did you do that because you wished to change them at that point?

If you mean amendment fees, they are non refundable. If flights were cancelled in April, you could have requested refund of voucher back then. If not cancelled, you could have requested voucher.

The amendment/service fee is usually a non-refundable fee.  You are paying to move your flight.  BA moved your flight so they did what you paid them for.

Is it just the fee you are concerned about?  Did you pay a fare difference too? Have they refunded that?
  • We changed the dates of the flights because my son got his uni exam dates mixed up so had to
amend them to a later date.
We were charged an admin fee of £150 each and this is what they haven’t refunded. (£600 in total).
I can understand if we cancelled we would lose this charge but our flights were cancelled by BA, we had every intention of getting on the plane ✈️ .
Just wanted to ask before I look to see if it would be worth pursuing the ombudsman.

Even if you had a case, you'd have to find an ombudsman whose jurisdiction covers such matters....

You paid £150pp as a fee to move your booking from May info the future. BA did that for you.

What subsequently happened to the booking is not relevant in terms of that fee.
