Student loan retracted without advanced warning

My son has started his 3rd year, completed his loan application & had the SLC letter confirming his payments etc. Out of the blue yesterday (Saturday) he received a letter in the post saying he wasnt getting the money now because he had decided to not do the course. Well this is news to him & has put his head in a bad place all weekend. Obviously no one at SLC or the UNI are available to contact & he thinks everything is over. There is nothing on his online account to indicate any attempt to query his status
How on earth do they make such a mistake & not think to confirm with the student.
Anyone got any useful contacts we can contact while we wait on replies to messages sent to SLC & Uni.

The universities seem to be pretty good. The Student Loans Company are outstandingly incompetent. It is hard to believe any company could be that bad. But they are. Total clowns. You can phone them up but if they promise to do anything I can guarantee they won't do what they have promised. I am going through the complaints process but I am pretty sure they won't follow their own process. The final part is an appeal to external assessors. If the loans company lose that they apparently ignore it anyway. Not sure if you can take them to court. Hopefully you can.0

Today he received a letter confirming £0 Maintenance & £0 Course fees.
The SLC has emailed saying its not their fault
The UNi has emailed saying it is there fault & they will correct their mistake
Estimate 5 days to reach SLC, no time frame for SLC to issue funds - guess its the bank of mum & dad again!
- Still doesnt put something in place to protect students - particularly those who are under extreme pressure0 -
This happened to my daughter last year, she mistakenly put the wrong DoB on either her uni or loan application (can't remember which) it took about a month for SLC to sort, they're not quick.
