Replacing an Ipad battery?

Hi folks,
We gave an Ipad got around 2012 (Ipad 3?)  and it seems that the battery needs replacing, just stays at the red charging indicator when we try to charge, Have tried different cables and chargers but no good.
It really had got a lot of use by our autistic child over the years and has a good protective case in case of drops.
Advice appreciated as regards replacing the battery (we would try and get a local phone and tablet repair shop to do it)
Would hope to be able to get it done for maybe £60 or so, but just wondering if that is a reasonable price to hope for, and also how safe are replacement batteries as we don't want anything to happen, as often we leave the house leaving the Ipad charging, and its a child that uses it?
Many thanks for your advice.

Have you looked at replacing it with a refurb instead?
  • Having tried to do this myself I would suggest going down the refurb route as dismantling an ipad in itself is fiddly but getting it to go back together completely is very difficult. In frustration I ended up buying a new ipad, I'm now left with a new replacement battery and a junked ipad 2.

  • Contact your nearest Apple Store and book an appointment for a replacement battery.
The standard replacement price I believe is £99.
I did this several weeks ago with my Ipad Air which is 6 years old. They carried out a diagnostic test to confirm that the battery was now failing, and then explained that instead of replacing the battery, they would offer me a new ipad of exactly the same specification.
The cost for this offer if I was prepared to accept it was £89, but I would need to wait 3 days for the item to be delivered to store.
I did wonder whether the replacement would be a refurbished model, but I can tell from the serial number that it is definitely new.
It was all a bit of a no brainer really!
I accept that this may be more than it would cost to have a replacement battery installed by a 3rd party repair shop, but then you pays your money and takes your choice.

Not sure what you did but I've done my daughters iPad battery, LCD and several digitiser screens, the hardest part is getting the digitiser screen off without breaking it, as long as you map out where the various screws go after removing the digitiser screen then the rest is really quite simple.
