Car insurance/driving licence question

Hi all. I'm on comparison webistes looking for a car insurance quote and it's asking for when my wife and I passed our driving tests and got our licences.  Our current licences only show the issue date for that card which was when we moved house.  I stil have the old paper copies and the only date on that is under 'Provisional Entitlement' which has other categories of vehicles.  The date on mine looks about right but my wife says hers is way too early.  Can anyone shed any light on whether this date is the same as the date that our original licences would have been issued please?  Thanks for reading.

  • They usually only ask how many years you have held a licence - are they asking for the specific date ?

Yes they want how many years but what the 'Provisonal entitlement' date is on my wife's licince is 2 years earlier than when she says she passed her test.

The back of the pink picture cards tell you a vaild from date got the different vehicle types - you should be able to figure out what year you passed your test  from that (if you dont already know)

You're right!!!  I scanned that card so many times, I don't know how I missed the dates on there.  Thank you.

In my experience they usually just ask how long you've held your licence. Mine's over 30 years but sometimes the numbers on the form only go up to 25+ or something, so I have to click that. I don't think you have to be exact. Sometimes they also say that if you put your driving licence number you could get a discount (I've yet to get that!) An approximate date is usually enough.

The date you passed IS on the back of your new card licences, it's tiny but it's there. There are five columns and under the column headed '10', if you just look down there, about a third of the way down should be the date you passed. If it's on mine, it should be on yours. And under the column headed '11', next to the pass date will be the expiry date.

Column 10 is described as 'valid from', NOT the test date.
In that column on my licence there are three different dates. The latest of those dates is shown as <09.04.74, which presumably means before that date - so far so good, I certainly passed my only test some years earlier. The other two dates are in 2013 and 2015, for no fathomable reason.

1974 was when driver and vehicle records were moved from county councils to DVLA.
