Comparison Lies

Options
I called my dual fuel energy supplier and received data regarding my usage - I asked for my yearly consumption of gas and electricity - to assist with seeking a new deal and switching supplier.  I entered my yearly consumption into MSE comparison to search for a new deal.  The deal did look too good to be true, and it was, one month after switching to a new supplier, they now want to increase my direct debit by over £50 a month.
Twice this has happened now using this site so next time I will try something else.  I don't think I am doing anything wrong here.

  • Did you convert the gas meter reading to Kwh when giving your consumption? If not your gas usage will be much higher than your figures suggest. That may be why you need to pay more.
  • You direct debit and tariff prices aren't the same.

If they're needing to increase your direct debit then it would suggest that your yearly consumption provided to them doesn't match what you're currently using.

As @knightstyle mentioned, the gas reading may not have been in kWh.

Alternatively, it's likely your current consumption is a lot more than what it was for the last year if you are currently working from home.

Comparison savings can be based on a default expensive standard tariff, compared to a new supplier super saver tariff. Do your own calculations.

I beg to differ.  You seem to be under the impression your direct debit is an all-you-can-eat thing, "pay £75 (or whatever) a month and get through all the gas and electricity you like".  Doesn't work like that.

Never happens for me. I tell the new supplier my annual consumption, they quote a price,  I pay it. Apart from small variations in consumption (gas use affected by weather, electricity use affected by LED light bulb replacements) everything works out fine and the annual cost is what was quoted.

There's only one explanation - you must be providing the wrong consumption figures. Do you read your meters monthly? What is your annual consumption? Have you converted gas m3 into kWh correctly?  £50 a month is our entire electricity bill and just over half our gas bill and we're high users. So a £50 increase indicates that something is very very wrong.

As you're using a dual fuel supplier you are probably paying more than you need to. Check separate suppliers - you'll be pleasantly surprised!
