Quick question on inspection of meters please?

Yesterday, a chap asked to inspect my electric meter (gas outside), electric inside. I asked why, as I have smart meter, and he kept insisting he still had to inspect it. Haven't had this request before, for years since having smart meter. Is this legit? Did let him in (I know - brain fog); he didn't declare which company/supplier he was with, didn't have company van, did have a sort of vague uniform - black cap and top with lanyard which I couldn't read... And stupidly I didn't ask for proof of ID - I know I am a berk.... Anyone else heard of this?

If anyone comes unannounced to the door like this tell them you want a pic of their identification before letting them in. If they refuse lock the door and try to get a pic of their car, which will be parked nearby.
Then get in touch with your local police as there is sometimes a spate of distraction burglaries using these methods.1 -

Thank you all, you've set my mind more at ease, that he probably was legit.... I did make sure all doors were shut, and kept an eye on him. And he did only focus on checking the meter... And I do have my back-up dog! Definitely legit, meter readers come at least once a year even if you have smart meters1
