1 Year Fixed Rate Saving Accounts With Smartsave

  • Today I had the same experience as the previous forumite, iburt. For the linked account, I gave the details of a linked account with Firstdirect, which I've had for about 30 years. This was rejected so I couldn't open the account. Smartsave don't seem to be very smart.

"Linked account too old" could almost be understandable. I have an ancient account with first direct that is unknown to the CRAs even though it's sometimes overdrawn.

That’s outrageous;...my current account hasn’t changed in over 40 years so I guess I’d have had no chance opening an account with SmartSave.

Perhaps my current account isn’t as current as I thought it was.

I’m ancient and so is my current account;...are Smartsave being ageist? :D

  • SmartSave don't have a phone line you can call so already I would be sceptical of using them.  Also their fixed rate saver accounts keep appearing and disappearing.  This morning they had fixed rate account available and now they have been 'snapped up'.  This kept happening last week as well.
  • today after seeing that MSE gave it a thumbs up, i attempted to apply.
it doesnt seem to like W10 so after a webchat, where various "solutions" were recommended (yawn)
I switched  to IOS and started the application.
as previous poster have said, you get  to the end of all of the bumf, and then i got told sorry
my bank accounts are either too new, as in Monzo or Starling or too old like Coop and Santander.
any bank account that was started before 1998 is excluded, as is any of the new modern online Johnny-come-latelys, because Equifax wont talk to them.
very disappointing,  especially after the "what we'd go for" endorsement in the savings section

The security to login to your Smartsave account is poor, no memorable information or 2-factor authentication, just an email address and password. Is there any rules about internet banking security in the UK?

IIRC, the only withdrawal(s) you can make from Smartsave are to your registered current account, with which you have to have made a deposit beforehand. Thus there's no issue if you don't have 2FA.

If someone's password was cracked they could still view the account balance though.
  • I was thinking of opening a savings account with them but having read about the problems people have had with current accounts which are too old I checked on a live chat session to see if this is still a problem - the agent confirmed that it is. No suggestion other than to use a different account! Bizarre, to say the least. I've never had this problem when trying to open accounts with other providers.

I opened their 1Year Fixed at 1.36% on 25th funded it on the 26th. Looked on the 27th and saw they were offering 1.41% ... which disappeared quickly and today they are offering 1.34%. Not something that gives you a lot of confidence in their operations! Hey Ho! Maybe not the best around but it's done and can sit there for a year!
