if I wanted to resign from my job for a couple of years and live off of my savings do I still need to make repayments on my student loan, and if so, how do I calculate how much I need to repay each month?

No - student loan is taken out of income.
If you have earned less than the repayment limit in a particular tax year you will be able to claim back student loan repayments (you will also be able to claim back income tax).0
