Will I be bottom of the pile when applying for an internal job while a consultation is happening?

Hi all. So sadly my company are having a consultation and it is sad as some very good people will leave. However, I’ve been working toward a role and been on a secondment in a certain role, which I always knew I’d need to apply for. But now in this new world a colleague will apply for this job who is just applying for it because they can, just because it’s a job. And I get that. However, I’m being told by some colleagues that it is pointless me applying as the colleague will get it automatically anyway as they are in consultation and some are telling me it will be a points based selection process. I’m mega confused and as much as I feel for anyone being made redundant I’m also gutted as I’ve been working on this for so long. Issue is, this person is ‘above my pay grade’ so will be with a great chance above all anyway. So can a give any clarity on if they’d auto get the job etc

Sorry the spell check on my phone isn’t playing ball. The job I’ve been working towards and the secondment are the same and the job is now advertised. So wondering if anyone can give clarity on if my colleague would be favoured because of the consultation0

Apply for the role. You have nothing to lose. There'll be various criteria that everyone will be scored against. Because they are on a higher pay grade means little. As far as the organisation is concerned it's the best person for the specific role.0

Being on a higher pay grade may work against them as the company may choose you as they could pay you less. Ignore office gossip and discouraging statements and apply for the roleIf you are querying your Council Tax band would you please state whether you are in England, Scotland or Wales0

Ignore them! As others have said, it's just office gossip and mind games.
Just apply for the job you want, and the job you have been preparing for and ignore what others are telling you. They are trying to chip away at your confidence and it seems to me that they're doing a pretty good job of it. It's nothing to do with anyone else so don't let them get to you.
You want that job, you go and get that job!!Please note - taken from the Forum Rules and amended for my own personal use (with thanks) : It is up to you to investigate, check, double-check and check yet again before you make any decisions or take any action based on any information you glean from any of my posts. They may have some kind of priority status but they most likely still have to pass essential criteria which they may not so go for it! They may also have a trial period (in law although not all companies do it, they may just place perm) so even if you are reserve then if they fail the trial or another role comes or up they leave (probably applying for other jobs if they are at risk) then you may well get it!0

By applying for the job you have already been seconded into shows you are enjoying it and want to be part of the team. The department knows what you are like as you have been working for them. I would say you have the advantage! Ignore the office gossip, normally the ones doing the gossiping are the ones that go behind your back and apply for the job.0
