Just to clarify - so-called 'diabetic sweets' are in fact sweetened with sorbitol, which is a powerful laxative.

Boots used to produce these type of sweets, but AFAIK have stopped making them now.

    Have a look: http://www.diabetes.org.uk/en/About_us/News_Landing_Page/2743/

  • Agave syrup is a good sweetener if you are avoiding the artificial sweeteners. It's a bit expensive, but available in most supermarkets. Nice sweetness, and good for those 'must have a little sweetness' moments. x Claire

Hello - a quick update here - since posting about agave above (in my previous existence as Claire 1847, I got confused after absence and came back again with a new login!) I have discovered Sweet Freedom. it is a natural fruit sweetner made from fruit 100% and it is cheaper than agave and we ALL love it. WHich saves money anyway as before we had bottles of honey, maple syrup, agave etc - most of which were sticky and nasty! OH and son need to watch GI/Gl for diabetes and blood sugar, the rest of the hoarde just need to calm down a bit, and everyone likes the taste of this sweetfreedom which is just peachy for me (and minding my waistline)!

Anyway, I tend to get mine from Wholefoods or Planet Orgnaic when I'm in London, BUT in terms of MSE I got my email newsletter from Janey Lee Grace last weekend and there is a BOGOF on the Sweet Freedom on my fave diet site diet freedom. hurrah.

Details are - go to http://www.dietfreedom.co.uk/diet-shop/sweet-freedom/sweet-freedom---mild and put in JLG in the promo code box when you order one bottle of the mild (the newsletter was quite specific it's one for one, not any more, and only til 17th feb FYI) and you get a free rich version. I do love a bargain!

Janey lee grace (https://www.imperfectlynatural.com) is a great source for the healthy competitions and money off stuff etc, so worth signing up for her newsletter.

I did post about this in the diet bit too, but as this is diabetic thread and it's a good diabetic sweetner that doesnt give you the sh**s  or sound like a lab experiment thought good idea to stick here too. you can bake great stuff with it too, I make cakes, biscuits, hot chocolate, and even chocolate truffles, so works as a diabetic sweet too :T

my brother is a diabetic (type1) and has been from the age of 6 he is 40 this year so there isn't much he doesn't know about sweets or chocolate and he has to be careful about the diabetic chocolate/sweets that he does eat but his consultant told him a while ago not to bother with the stuff but buy a bar of chocolate and have one square as a treat now and again and he finds this is the best way for him, for christmas i gave him a box of mint thins, chocolate covered toffees, and a couple of small bars of chocolate and this will last him till his birthday in july and he always has a box of celebrations of heros in the house so that if visitors do come in or my boys are there they can all have one small sweet and no one is left out, on average he would have 3 sweets a week
