Diabetic sweets

Am in the process of finishing off some favours for christmas day, and have bought a chocolate truffle for each one.

However, one of the guests is diabetic, so I had thought I would simply buy a diabetic chocolate piece. But can I find any!!!! I can find bars, or a box full, but not a single one (or even 5 if I had to although am trying to keep costs down).

Wondered if any forum members were diabetic and knew where I can buy a single chocolate (ideally truffle size to fit inside favour???

Any help appreciated!

Thorntons do a good range, you have to buy them in bags though but guess you could split and and individually wrap them, would look quite nice :)

If you attend a Diabetic Clinic, they warn you not to buy diabetic sweets and chocolate.
I used to be indecisive but now I am not sure.

My Dad is also a diabetic who uses insulin - his nurse told him he could have a treat or two on Xmas day. I'm sure one truffle would not put their blood sugar up too high.
My Dad was also told to avoid diabetic chocolates.

sainsburys do a sugar free chocolate ,deffinately would not buy diabetic stuff apart from the fact its a rip off it has a severe laxative effect and goes as far as putting warnings on the products especially choc , my nurse said if i needed a fix of choc to buy the bite size bars.

  • Don't waste your money on 'diabetic' sweets and chocolates, really they are a bad idea. Most are sweetened with polyols which can have really hectic gastrointestinal effects (to put it nicely). My OH (type 2, insulin controlled) is very sensitive to them and they make me very err :o, really not nice at all. Also there is not real concrete evidence that the 'net carbs' / no impact on blood sugar that the polyols claim to have are true, so it can make it hard to keep blood sugar under control. The other artificial sweeteners, well, that's up to you, personally I think the evidence that they are 'not bad' for us is too biased towards the very large well funded companies who produce them.

We both really love chocolate and wanted to find a way round the problems above, so we have taken the low GL line on this and are now have the occasional dark chocolate (Green and Blacks, Carte Noir, Divine, etc) as apparently the ethos is the higher the cocoa content (best is 70% plus) the less room for sugar and other rubbish. It is also very rich so you don't actually eat as much, and with less sugar you don't get as much of a sugar rush so you don't get that 'arghhhhhhhhhhhhhh must consume the entire bar' craving feeling. Also you will find that quite a few of the cheaper chocolate and sweets ranges are still stuffed with 'trans fats' or 'hydrogenated fats' which is not something anyone should be eating a lot of and are being banned in many countries now.

Hotel chocolat have the right idea, they have a range of 'reduced sugar' chocs that are darker and just less sweet, very nice, if not exactly slimming! Think you can get them online, we're lucky enough to have one not too far away  My personal favourite is the tub of dark chocolate 'chips' you can get that melt into a delicious puddle of rich chocolateyheaven that then is rather too tasty when poured sparingly (because it is so rich) over a good quality vanilla ice cream. (On ice cream, go for the good stuff with less sugar and salt in it, very much worth the money. Mackies is good and not too expensive, as is Green and Blacks, though much more expensive.) Treats ONLY if diabetic or dieting though of course :A I sometimes forget that, and bearing in mind that this is MSE not a recipe site ;) the logic is you pay a bit more but eat less of it therefore no extra damage to pocket but much better for your health.

Diabetes Uk have been campaiging to get 'suitable for diabetics' taken off packs as well as they say that a balanced diet is the thing. You can read about that at https://www.diabetes.org.uk, https://www.hotelchocolat.co.uk, and at my guru site https://www.dietfreedom.co.uk! I know I harp on about it, but it is where all my info comes from as it seems very well researched.

Also agave syrup is a good sweetener to use instead of nasty artificials, you can get this in most supermarkets now next to the sugar and also in the healthfood stores. It is a bit more expensive (cheapest in Tesco i think), but you don't use as much. I am having dejavu whilst typing this as think I might have mentioned it before!

  • ok so I lied, one more bit of repetition ;)

If you find that you can't get past the cravings then try EFT (emotional freedom technique), it is fantastic, and has helped me stop a lot of weird food behaviour after years of battling with it.

There is tons of information on the internet about it, personally we got ours through you know where (guru site link above!) and found them very effective. You don't even have to go see the EFT person, it works really well over the phone which is how I got OH to do it, if he'd had to go and talk to someone in the flesh he never would have done it ;)

really going now :D x Claire

    Thanks for all your input!

I was aware of the thought that "diabetic" sweets are actually bad for you, but just wanted to make a gesture as the others are getting a chocolate sweet. He is not insulin dependant but has to keep a firm control on his blood sugar levels and of course christmas day is one day that sort of goes out of the window as he insists on treble helpings of xmas pud!!

On reading Claires thoughts, may just give him the chocolate the others are getting, as he will have to be good the next few days instead!!

many thanks for all the thoughts though
  • Might be a bit past the Christmas time, but I just lined up some lovely chocs for the OH for Valentine's day, literally a small token offering, quite dark, hardly any sugar, from Hotel Chocolat. they will be a lovely treat! and I got to try one in the shop which was real nice of them. Also in supermarkets now there are a big range of the dark chocolate bars, so quite easy to find when you just gotta have a bit of choc. :D
