Where's the personal responsibility here? You've chosen to remain in an unhabitable home. You've said 'we', so are there kids involved in this?
Please try to understand me a bit here mate. These thing happen gradually. We were constantly being told it was about to be fixed and I didn't have the time or money to just move my whole family. Moving is expensive and stressful.

Yes, I've got kids. As I mentioned in the original post, one of whom has had health problems.
Indeed, but ultimately it's your job to ensure kids are in a safe environment. I think the priority just needs to be finding a safe home for you family.
Absolutely. I feel awful and guilty that my kids have had to live in this house, believe me. We wanted to leave after 12 months but couldn't. Luckily, we do have a safe home lined up and we'll be out within the month.

But it doesn't feel right that they can treat people so badly. Do you agree? Or do you just think the only right you have as a tenant is to leave if you don't like it.

It's certainly the most effective, direct, and certain way to prevent continued ongoing problems... yes.

The problem is that you have acted in a way that suggests you accepted how the problem was being dealt with, so it’s difficult to argue for compensation for something that you’ve reported and subsequently lived with for a long time.

I believe that people have a personal responsibility for themselves.

I believe that the best way for consumers to get 'even' is to vote with their feet.

I dislike big government, so generally am against the 'nanny' state.
  • When you're in the situation, it's not as easy as that. We'd moved here for it to be our family home for a long time. We'd decorated, bought furniture to fit the house, and tried to build a life here. It's not quite as straightforward as just moving out. Especially in the last 6 months.

Maybe we accepted their behaviour too many times, but we always tried to give them the benefit of the doubt.

But we've spoken to the council now, given them our evidence, and they think the landlords have acted appallingly so they are going to investigate.

But you said in your first post

In short, we've had damp from the moment we moved in (the wall was soaking the day we arrived)

Why would you want to make this a long term family home when there were long term unsolved issues?.
