Transferring over V5s, vehicles and Insurance help please

Hi,
My dad is in hospital.  And well, he wont be coming out...
I'm trying to help my mom as she's stressing about the vehicles.
A.  Dad is the registered keeper and holder of the insurance on their car.  Mom is a named driver.  If I get him to sign it over the v5 to mom, will that play havoc with the insurance?
B. He owns a classic motorbike, again he's the registered keeper and the insurance holder. He wants me to handle the sale of the bike so mom can have the money. So again, if he just signs the V5 over to me? Then I can sort it all out when we're ready...  I suppose the insurance can just be cancelled? I cant ride it anyway.

Any advice or help is appreciated.
Thanks

Your father could give the  car and the bike to your mother. Insuring the car on her own behalf should be no problem and might be best done now?

Presumably the bike is garaged to keep it safe, clean and dry? I wonder would your mother be able to insure it on a "non rider" basis?

I appreciate that  advertising it for sale under the current national and personal circumstances has certain difficulties.

Does your father have any contacts (through a classic bike owners' club perhaps)?

If the insurances are not up for renewal at the moment is there a need to do anything other than establish what steps you might take at renewal? You would need to speak to the insurance companies if you do change ownership over now as doubtless then the insurance would need to change to reflect the new owners level of risk. I guess it really depends where the biggest stress lies at this time and whether having a plan going forward would reduce that or whether only changing ownership over now would reduce it.

Agree with approaching any contacts your father might have with regards to the classic bike to get the lowdown on selling it or even to find a potential buyer.

If your dad does sign over the car/bike to somebody else, I am sure you are aware, his road tax will be cancelled and a new road tax will have to be bought. If there any months remaining on the tax, your dad will get a refund.

You father could remain as registered keeper and  just change the car insurance to your mother as main driver.    if she is already named on the insurance they may accept a telephone  call from her.
if he signs the car over to your mother both the insurance and the vehicle tax will case and your mother will have to tax and insure the car  in her name.

Yes my mom already has the car, she uses it everyday, I'm just thinking it will be easier to sign it over to her legally while dad is still capable of giving permission? Otherwise how would mom prove that the car is hers in future? :-/
The bike is in a garage.  Not sure if, as its off the road, we would have to have any insurance?
That's the thing, they live in Birmingham, which is under lockdown, plus mom cant deal with people coming to view the bike.  Which is why dad's asked me to sort it.  But I'd rather wait till things are less chaotic, and I've got a clear head.  That's why I thought of registering me as the keeper.  So at least then I would have the v5 ready to switch to a new buyer.
I dont know... I hate blummin paperwork! so many forms!

Sorry to mention it, as it isn’t clear exactly what your father’s situation is, but do you/your mother have power of attorney and is there a Will? The former would allow you to act for your father whilst he is still alive and would obviously apply to all aspects of his paperwork not just the car/bike. The latter, if you were executor, would allow you to do the same should he sadly pass away.
It may be better to get those sorted while your father is still able.  Transferring ownership, tax, insurance to your name could then be done as and when you have a clearer head to deal with it.
I sympathise on the  lockdown added stress as I am in a similar situation with a car!

There might be a long delay in sorting out PoA now.

It seems to me that it would be easier for your father to sign ownership of  both over to your mother now and for her to be insured in her own right.

I think some sort of insurance should be maintained on the motorbike as it is (presumably) valuable?

Is your mother up to ringing the  current insurer to discuss the matter?

Dad has a will, but not done the POA yet.
Yea its a nightmare, solicitors etc all working from home, cannot phone anyone!  Then because me and mom aren't allowed to visit dad at the same time... makes sorting things even more stressful.
Ar of course I didn't think of the bike being stolen or something.. right, will get on the the insurers then.
    thankyou all

When my husband died his car was transferred to me. Contact the Bereavement section https://www.gov.uk/tell-dvla-about-bereavement
The tax on it was refunded and I had to to tax it. The insurance continued as an  executry  until the renewal date  with no xtra cost.
At renewal I took out insurance in my own name and the insurance company creditted me with my husband's 9 year NCB.
