Insurer cancelled my policy

i bought a minibus a few months back which someone started to convert to a camper by adding a rocknroll bed to making it a 5 seat van which the v5 also says.
Now something had flagged up on my insurer system which doesnt match this, they are cancelling my policy due to modifications. They want to charge my £75 for the privilege. Can they do this as they are not willing to insure me ? I could understand if i wanted to cancel before my year was up but not when they can't or won't insure me anymore.
Thankd

Did you declare the conversion?   Mate converted his van and had 3 months to provide proof the conversion had been done.
Insurance cost less as a camper than a standard van. Think he had to have a bed and water/cooker installed to qualify?

Censorship Reigns Supreme in Troll City...

  •  filled in go compare best i could and insured as a 5 seat van. Not a full conversion as no sink or cooker etc. Today they say its not a camper so cant insure and wont insure the mods which is fair enough.
Can they charge me £75 for forceing me to cancel though ?
  • Do the T&C’s on the policy say anything about admin fees or cancellation fees?

You say you "filled in go compare best you could"...

The second question you are asked on that site, after the registration number, is...
""Has the car been modified, adapted and/or fitted with any optional extras such as changes to the bodywork, engine or wheels?"
There's a question mark next to that. Click on it, and a box appears with...
    "Modifications

A vehicle has been modified or adapted if it’s been changed from the manufacturer’s standard specification in any way. Examples include:

    • Changes to the bodywork, including spoilers and/or body kits
    • Changes to the suspension or brakes
    • Cosmetic changes such as alloy wheels or paint
    • Changes to the engine or exhaust system

If your car has been modified or adapted in any way, answer ‘Yes’ and then specify each of the relevant modifications when prompted."

Did you say "Yes" to that? What did you fill in when prompted? Did you decide you couldn't explain properly on the web form, and call the insurer before giving them your payment...?

Never mind the £75, I think you may be facing answering "yes" to "Have you ever had insurance cancelled..."

Go Compare is the wrong wrong wrong way to insure this sort of thing.
  • Yes , think i was a bit ignorant on that front. To me i was insuring a 5 seat van as ive always had normal cars. Its all in hand now though, waiting on some calls back from brokers.

What did you answer to that "Modified?" question? Yes or no?

If you answered no, then you're going to have to tell insurers you've had insurance cancelled, because it's down to inaccuracy in the quote.
If it's simply down to a misunderstanding over accurately described modifications, then I'd have said the blame lay with the insurer, and you wouldn't.

And do the brokers you contacted know that your previous insurer cancelled your contract?  If you have told them - fine - but if you thought you could getaway without telling them tou are almost certainly wrong - they'll find out...
